You can have traditional warfare on fields away from cities, but sometimes in cities like when there is a siege. If this is for answering slander from non-muslims, you can start with comparing to what rules for warfare they have or had during WW2 for example, you will see that they are basically the same (perhaps they copied?) which is refer to as traditional warfare, but we adhere to them better. The error of the terrorists is that they don't differentiate between peace and war that has been declared between two nations, everything and every situation is war to them. Besieging a city, even attacking by night, doesn't mean you're allowing civilians to be killed. No, the Messenger didn't allow killing any civilians, let alone women and children.
